Elementary Education Years of Study

When children enter school in the early years it is call the elementary education years of study. The use of the term elementary when used to describe school years refers to basic or beginning education. These years are the years that build the child’s foundation for learning. It is when they learn all of the tools that will help them to be successful learners in the future. A child can either become inspired to learn as a result of his elementary education years or he may loose his desire totally. The introduction to learning can be a very gradual one for some children and the early years help them to ease into it.

Many children will begin their formal elementary education at the age of six years. In some countries it may begin as early as four years of age. Some cultures feel children are ready and welcome elementary education from an early age and that an early start gives them an advantage. In the early years the focus is on the forming of their learning minds. Some people feel this can not start too young and children should be in school very young. Others feel children need time before their creativity is limited.

Even though an elementary education does encourage creativity it also requires the child to begin to think in an organized manner. Some parents feel they would like their child’s personality to be strong before they are subjected to formal structure in a class room. These feelings vary between cultures and child rearing methods. Some cultures even have different standards for children of different sexes.

Elementary Education, the Beginning of Structured Learning

An elementary education is the beginning of organized and structured learning for most children. Some may have had a few years in pre-school classes but this is often an option for parents. Most countries require children to enter some form of accredited elementary education school by the time they are six years old. They will have standards and lesson plans approved by the school board. Most children are eager to start school for many reasons. They like the excitement and fun with other children. Most children are ready to start learning by this age and they have curious minds waiting for direction. A few children will be less thrilled at the idea of leaving home and mom every day.

Elementary education needs to help all types of children adapt to the new routine of learning. The teacher needs to find a happy medium for the whole class. She needs to keep the eager children satisfied while encourage children that are facing struggles. The eager children may even be able to draw shy children out and help them make the adjustment. Almost all children will eventually settle in and find a way to adjust to school. The few children that do not adjust in the early years may be facing other problems that are not obvious immediately.

The years of elementary education usually last for the first six years a child is in school. After that they will continue their studies but with higher expectations and more personal pressure. The focus will be much more on theory and retaining it. The testing will increase and students will need to pass established levels before they can progress.

Elementary Education Equips Children with Skills

If a child has had a successful elementary education he will be ready to move on to higher learning in older grades. His elementary education will have equipped him with the study skills and organizational skills he will need to undertake harder courses of study. He will be socially comfortable in his class and be ready to move on in his learning life. The early years of study for a child focus on preparing them for more serious learning. Learning is a very gradual process and leads from one step of understanding to the next. The early years are very important for a child to get comfortable with this process.

A good start in elementary education will encourage the child to strive and enjoy his later years of study. Teachers that work with young children must be strong in their teaching strategies and methods and understand the needs and fears of new students entering their class room. They may not be as concerned with teaching theory as they are with providing the tools for the student to adjust to his new routine. A structured day is foreign to many young children as they have been allowed to select their own pass times and play. Entering school and order can be a shock.

A teacher interested in started these students off with a good elementary education will want to encourage the shy children and help the unruly ones to find order. The teacher knows they will need these attributes to learn well for the rest of their lives. A good start is what every teacher of young children hopes for, for them.

Educational Toys and Free educational games make it fun to learn

Science Games on the Internet

The Internet has brought many new forms of science games to students. The science games that have popped up on school sites and other educational sites have provided new tools for the mind. Very young children can click and drag puzzle pieces together to make pictures of wild life appear. Older children can play hangman with science words. There are other quiz format science games based on popular board games that children can test their skills on. An all science Trivia match can be lively fun for a class of older students working on terminology. The challenge of the game will encourage them to work even harder to remember their lessons. They will have fun hearing other students answer science questions as they all listen and learn.

Science games can be learning aids for students when they have to work on their memory of difficult things like elements. The repetition of the games will help to student to remember things that may not other wise stay with him. Crossword puzzles can help with spelling words that are uncommon and not found in his every day language. Science teachers strive to find science games the children will find educational and help them understand the course.

The younger the age group of the students the more important science games will be. Older children will have developed better learning tools to retain and use much more theory. They will not have as many opportunities to combine their study of science with games. The science games will develop into experiments that may be equally as fun and educational for the students. The will be more structured though with a definite goal.

Early Childhood Educational Toys Increase Learning Potential Later in Life

The best way to educate children will always be a hot news topic. Are kids better with compact flash cards or writing out spelling lessons on the black board? Or are we more on track today with the world of technology and fun educational toys? Although the answer to the question may never warrant full agreement, one thing is for certain, when educational systems don’t appear to be working, a new solution is immediately sought. Instead of just looking at free educational games or educational toys for the classroom, many teachers get right down to basics when reviewing their teaching strategies.

In Wales, educators are questioning whether to scrap formal education from the age of five and replace it with more informal, play-based activities utilizing educational toys, for children between the ages of three and seven. Experts believe that formal education at too young of an age my actually put children off learning. With this in mind, it appears that the American model of starting formal education a little later, combined with effective utilization of free educational games, promotes a long-lasting positive attitude to learning.

In fact, early childhood development indicates that young children do not benefit significantly from formal teaching until their social and cognitive skills are sufficiently mature. With that in mind, starting children on reading and writing before they are ready may actually be counter-productive and inhibit learning. Instead children learn best through play and active involvement. Educational toys, therefore, serve a profound purpose in the early development of children. To better prepare children for formal education, start them out with free educational games and other interactive toys that encourage learning under the guise of fun.

Developing Math Skills Through Educational Software

Today your home computer can host a range of educational toys, thanks to new games offered in CD-ROM format. Although these games don’t fall into the category of free educational games, they can offer tremendous value that’s well worth the small investment. If spending your dollars on a good educational toy or software program, do a bit of research to find out what you should look for.

If you want to advance your child’s math skills, look for a software program that advances in difficulty level as your child progresses. Parents or educators should be able to preview the topics or learning challenges included on the many levels of each activity. Good educational toys should provide the opportunity to explore and experiment rather than simply regurgitate answers to drill questions. If children are able to learn through trial and error, they are more likely to retain what they learn. In this instance, educational math software has a leg up on free educational games, like flash cards that encourage memorization instead of real understanding.

Although free educational games are the easiest on your pocketbook, the many advances in technology have made it possible to really spice up the fun kids can have with educational toys. Just look for features that truly encourage learning and you’ll be part of enhancing a child’s educational experience.

Children and Pessimism

Children need emotional validation, especially young kindergarten-8. If their negative feelings about what is happening in their lives are not validated, they may continue focusing on the negative until they are validated. Children can become pessimistic if they do not feel they are being emotionally heard and validated.

As the parent of four children, I have learned to not skip the important step of emotionally acknowledging my children. Before I realized how important this was, I was eager to try and quickly change their negative feelings and views of their life into positives.

Once you have validated your kindergarten-8 child’s negative feelings, you can give your child a choice: to continue to perceive his/her situation as negative, or to choose to change it to a positive. The first choice teaches our kindergarten-8 children to be victims in a world of random events they are powerless to control. The second choice teaches them they have the power to change anything for the better.

Recently my daughter came to me expressing her negative feelings about a friend’s treatment towards her. I could have quickly dismissed her feelings and encouraged her to not let it bother her, or joined her by saying, “That is terrible! She is so mean.”

I did neither. Instead the conversation went something like this:

Mom: “That is unfortunate, Anne. You must feel really sad about the way she treated you.”

Anne: “I do. I don’t like it when she treats me that way.”

Mom: “I understand. Nobody likes to be treated that way. You deserve to have your friends love and respect you. When you are ready to clear these negative feelings, and would like my help, let me know. Or, you can continue feeling bad. But remember, whatever you focus on in life, you will have more of it show up as your experience.”

Anne: “I want to clear these bad feelings right now and create a positive friendship with her.”

At this point I took Anne through a process called “Emotional Freedom Technique” (see attached) which is designed to clear negative feelings and stressful energies that keep us from progressing.

I have taught my children that the law of attraction, or the law of the harvest (which is that whatever we put out returns to us multiplied) is in constant operation in their lives. If they put out negative thoughts and feelings, they will have more negative experiences show up in their lives. If they put out positive thoughts and feelings, they will have more positive experiences show up in their lives.

Anne understands this universal principle and was eager to clear the negative thoughts and feelings and change them into positives. It was important that her negative feelings were acknowledged and validated first.

Most adults in our world were not emotionally validated. They were emotionally shut down or ignored. As parents we can do a much better job of validating our children’s emotional response to their lives’ events-free of any judgment. Once validated, those negative thoughts and feelings can be easily released and positive thoughts and feelings can be created.

After Anne cleared her negatives, she decided what she wanted to create was a fun-loving, kinder relationship with her friend. She helped put this into motion in her life by speaking what she wanted in positive “I am” statements such as this:

– I am experiencing all my friends respecting me and being kind to me.
– I am respectful and kind to all my friends.
– We have fun together and support each other.
– Things always work out the best for me.
– I am grateful for the love and support of my good friends.

After Anne’s energy-clearing session, she called her friend and easily made amends. Her friend was apologetic, they laughed and started planning their next activity. What Anne had asked for in her affirmations had already begun to show up for her.

Children model their parent’s perception and language about the world. If Mom and Dad are pessimistic, the children often are too. If Mom and Dad are optimists who are willing to validate their child’s negative emotional responses to a situation and then help them change that, they play a powerful role in teaching their children they can have lives that are positive with many successes to look forward to.

Are Electronic Gimmicks Needed to make Learning FUN?

Once upon a time educational toys for children included compact flash cards, spelling games or reading with a parent or teacher. Today free educational games seem like a thing of the ancient past. The educational toys of today seem to cost a small fortune and completely take the parent or teacher out of the picture.

Take a moment to think about the commercials for educational toys you’ve seen this week. Most of them involve batteries, noise and of course lots of fun, but how much learning really takes place when the toy does all the work for the child. Unlike free educational games of the past, these battery-operated educators cost money to supposedly help children advance their learning skills. But are kids really learning anything from these toys?

Some parents and teachers are doubtful that the so-called educational toys of today are doing anything close to educating. Pricey toys that tout learning advantages, such as developing reading, vocabulary, spelling and phonics, may simply be a flop. After all, how much work does a child have to do when the toy reads the sentences, spells the words and does it all while it’s batteries are fully charged? With so many high-tech monster toys on the market, many adults are opting to go back to the good old days of free educational games, where all it took to make learning fun was a great book, an index finger and that all too famous sentence, “See Spot Run.”
